Frequently asked questions about screen-printed stickers

At what print run does screen printing become cheaper than digital printing?

Screen printing involves an initial set-up cost per colour, whereas digital printing does not. Once you reach a certain quantity, that one-off cost is no longer offset by the lower price per item, and from that point onwards, screen printing is the most cost-effective option. That threshold shifts downwards if your design has few colours and upwards if it has many. Send us your design and the quantity required, and you can then compare the two prices side by side.

Can I have a photo screen-printed?

Screen printing works with solid areas of colour, and each colour is printed using a separate screen. It is therefore better to create a photograph or a gradient digitally. Logos, line art and text are, however, the greatest strengths of screen printing.

Will I get my PMS colour exactly as it appears in my corporate identity?

Yes. The ink is colour-matched for your print run, so all the stickers come from the same batch. Silver, gold, fluorescent and glow-in-the-dark colours are also available.

How do I apply screen-printed stickers?

Dry – so without soap and water. If, when applying it, things don’t go as expected, one of our staff members will explain the best way to proceed.

Can screen-printed stickers be displayed outdoors?

That depends on the type of vinyl we print on, not on the printing technique. Monomeric vinyl is designed for flat surfaces and short-term use, whilst polymeric vinyl lasts longer and can be applied to slightly curved surfaces. There is also a protective laminate available for both short-term and long-term use.

What is the difference compared to a standard printed sticker?

The difference lies in the technique and, consequently, in the pricing structure. A digitally printed sticker is a viable option from as little as one piece and can handle any image. Screen printing only becomes viable for larger print runs, but it then delivers a uniform colour that remains consistent throughout the entire run.

Can I have a shape other than a rectangle?

Yes. Rectangular, with rounded corners, or a shape cut to match your design – anything is possible. Text and logos can also be cut out and peeled away, with application film over the top so that you can apply them in a single movement.

Do you stick the stickers on as well?

For a print run, you usually apply them yourself, and they stick on quite easily when dry. If the stickers need to be applied on site to vehicles, building façades or equipment, our own installation team will visit you as agreed.

How much does a screen-printed sticker cost?

Screen printing is not included in the ordering module, as the price depends on the number of colours and the print run. Please provide your design, the number of colours and the print run, and we will calculate the cost for you.

From how many items does screen printing become cost-effective?

Screen printing requires a separate screen for each colour, and the set-up cost is only charged once. For runs of around a hundred items or fewer, digital printing is usually cheaper; above that, the balance shifts. We’ll work out the costs for both options and let you know which one comes out on top.

What is the largest size?

Limited by the screen size, so screen printing remains smaller than digital printing. For a large image in a corporate colour, we sometimes combine the two: digital printing for the background, screen printing for the logo.

Description Silkscreen stickers

If you order the same sticker in large quantities, it all comes down to what you pay per item. With digital printing, that unit price remains roughly the same, no matter how many copies you have made. With screen printing, the work is done at the start, as a screen must be prepared for each colour. You spread this set-up cost across the entire run, so the more stickers you order, the lower the cost per sticker, until screen printing falls below the digital price. The tipping point is lower the fewer colours your design contains, which is why a logo or line drawing in one or two solid colours is the typical scenario. If you’re dealing with a small run, or a photograph with colour gradients, you’re better off with digitally printed monomer sticker. Send us your design and the quantity required, and we’ll calculate the costs for both options side by side.

Materials for Silkscreen stickers

Uniform PMS colours

Screen printing applies a solid layer of ink rather than a grid of dots. As a result, a corporate colour appears flatter and richer than is possible with digital printing.

Speciality inks

Silver, gold, fluorescent and glow-in-the-dark. These are only available as screen prints, as the particles are too large for a digital print head.

On monomer or polymer vinyl

White or transparent. Monomer is the cheapest option for a flat surface; polymer offers a longer service life and is also suitable for slightly curved surfaces.

Extra layers

  • Protective varnish in gloss, satin or matt, full-coverage or with cut-outs
  • Protective laminate for short- or long-term use
  • White undercoat or a reflective layer beneath the colours

Form

  • Rectangle, rounded corners or a cut-out shape
  • Text and logos plotted, cut out and fitted with appliqué film
  • Installation on request
