Frequently asked questions about plant labels

Are plant labels resistant to water and sunlight?

That’s what they’re designed for. We use films that the product data sheet specifies as suitable for outdoor use, waterproof and tear-resistant paper for tree trunk labels, and bioplastics. The choice depends on where the label will be placed and for how long.

Are the plant labels PVC-free?

Yes, in the standard versions. Priplak is listed as PVC-free on the product sheet, and Creafor has deliberately chosen polyester as an environmentally friendly alternative to PVC plant labels. From 2025, labels made from bioplastics will also be available.

What is the difference between a soil probe and a stump tag?

A soil marker is inserted into the potting compost or the ground; we manufacture these from polypropylene film, in a glossy or matt finish, and in white, coloured, black or transparent. A stump label is attached to the trunk or stump and is printed on waterproof, tear-resistant paper in matt white.

Are there any compostable labels?

Yes. Since 2025, we have been using bioplastics, including cold-compostable plastic. We use this type of material for, amongst other things, tree guards around young trunks.

Can I have a custom shape cut out?

Yes. We die-cut using a standard shape, or a new die-cut shape if your label requires a unique silhouette. A new die-cut shape is particularly worthwhile if you are producing the same range year after year.

What about large print runs?

We print smaller runs digitally in full colour. For large print runs, we use colour-by-colour or four-colour screen printing. If you place another order next season, we can reproduce the same design using the same colours.

Is the price shown in the order module?

No. Plant labels are not included as a standard feature in the module, as their design, material and print run vary considerably. If you provide details of these three aspects, we will quote a price accordingly.

What is the difference between this and a hangtag?

A plant label goes in the pot or in the ground and must be able to withstand water and sunlight. A hangtag is attached to the product itself, either by a string or through a hole. If you need a label for a bouquet or packaging, hangtags are the more suitable option.

What is the minimum order quantity?

From a single item upwards, although nurseries and garden centres always deal in batches. When the quantity reaches thousands, the process switches to screen printing and the price drops significantly.

What is the largest size?

Eighty by 120 cm in sheet form, and 127 cm wide on a roll. A plant label is considerably smaller than that, but it does mean that even a large sign next to a tree is made from the same material.

Can each label have a different name?

That’s possible, but variable data requires a separate file for each label. Please send us the list of species names, and we’ll let you know how much it will cost to prepare them.

Description Plant labels

Are water, potting compost and full sun standing between your label and the customer? If so, a plant label must, above all, remain what it is: legible even after weeks in a pot or in the ground. Creafor produces bespoke plant labels for nurseries, garden centres and florists, by variety and by range, featuring the name, care instructions, price or a barcode. We produce soil markers in polypropylene film, in a glossy or matt finish, and in white, coloured, black or transparent. Stem labels are printed on waterproof and tear-resistant paper in matt white. Since 2025, we have also been offering labels made from bioplastics, including cold-compostable plastic for tree protectors. Priplak is listed as PVC-free, and we deliberately use polyester as an eco-friendly alternative to PVC. If you’d prefer the label to hang from the plant or a bouquet, please see hangtags.
