Frequently asked questions about solid-core panels

Can solid-core boards be left outside?

That’s what it’s made for. The panel is designed for outdoor use where it is exposed to the elements, and it has no film coating that might peel off over time. That is precisely why solid-core panels are so often used in nature reserves and around sports grounds.

How long does a solid-core panel last?

The material is designed for displays that will remain in place for years. Our product specification sheet does not specify an exact number of years, so we do not quote one. How long the print itself retains its vibrancy depends mainly on how much sunlight the location receives.

What is the difference between this and Dibond?

Dibond is a flat panel with an aluminium outer layer: it is thinner, lighter and has a sleek appearance, and is often chosen for use on a façade. Solid-core panels are thicker, heavier and more impact-resistant. If the sign is to be mounted low down, in a public space or along the edge of a site, you should choose a solid-core panel.

Does an anti-graffiti laminate really work?

It creates a smooth, glossy finish on the print, which means the paint has less grip and can be removed without the print coming off as well. We recommend this if the sign is displayed in a place where spraying occasionally takes place.

What thicknesses is it available in?

We stock white solid-core HPL in 6 and 8 mm thicknesses as standard. Which of the two you need depends on the size and the number of support points. Large panels that are fixed at only a few points require the thicker sheet.

How is a panel like this fitted?

There are various mounting systems available: drill holes with bolts, a frame, spacers, a base or a suspension system. Please describe your application as precisely as possible, including the surface to which it will be attached, and we will recommend the most suitable system.

Can a solid-core panel be made in a different shape?

Yes. We can mill the sheet into a rectangular shape, with rounded corners, or into any shape you provide, and drill holes to the diameter you specify.

Do you install the panels on site?

That’s possible. Creafor has its own team and its own aerial work platform, so we can also install a sign high up on a façade or far out along a site. If the location is remote or difficult to access, please mention this in your enquiry.

What exactly is solid-core?

A solid sheet made of layers pressed together under high pressure, also known commercially as Trespa. The material is the same throughout, so a scratch does not reveal a different colour underneath.

How much does a solid-core panel cost?

That depends on the size, thickness and finish. Solid core is not listed as a standard option in the ordering module, as the sizes vary considerably. Please provide us with the dimensions and quantity, and we will work out the price for you.

What is the minimum order quantity?

Starting from a single unit. A single panel for a nature reserve or an industrial estate is the most common request.

How do I clean a solid-core panel?

With water and a soft cloth. The surface is hard and dense, so dirt doesn’t get trapped in it. If there is paint on it and it has an anti-graffiti laminate, this can be removed using the appropriate product.

When should I choose Dibond and when should I choose solid-core?

If you’re looking for a flat panel with a sleek aluminium finish for a façade, then Dibond is the better choice. If the panel needs to be able to withstand knocks and scratches in a place you don’t visit every year, then solid-core is the way to go.

Description Solid core panels

Is your sign displayed outdoors, in a place where you don’t want to have to drive out there every year to replace it? If so, solid-core panels – commonly known as Trespa – are the answer. Creafor prints directly onto white HPL solid-core panels, so there’s no film that starts to peel off after a few winters, and a scratch or knock leaves hardly any marks. That’s why these panels are used in nature reserves, alongside sports grounds and on industrial estates. If there’s a risk of spray paint in that location, we’ll apply an anti-graffiti laminate over the surface. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for a flat sign with a sleek aluminium finish for a building façade, then printing on dibond the better choice. Please let us know in advance where the panel will be hung, as this will determine the mounting system.

Are Volkern panels planned?

Please provide us with the plan or the dimensions, and tell us what needs to be included. We will assess the best options from a technical and budgetary perspective, and draw up a proposal covering design, production and installation.

Fitted as standard. We print directly onto the panel, so there’s no film that starts to peel off after a few winters. A scratch or a knock leaves hardly any marks.

With anti-graffiti laminate

A glossy coating over the print, for panels in areas that are occasionally spray-painted. Paint adheres poorly to it and can be removed without taking the image underneath with it.

  • Screen-printing, one colour at a time, for large print runs
