The EcoScore is our own assessment of the material’s environmental footprint, on a scale of 1 to 5. It says nothing about the quality, and the material must be recycled under the right conditions.

Frequently asked questions about printing on wood

Can a wooden panel be hung outside?

We would advise against that. Wood is less moisture-resistant, which is why this panel is intended for indoor use. If the sign really must remain outside, you’ll need to opt for Dibond or solid core. Please specify in your enquiry where the panel will be installed, and we’ll recommend the most suitable material.

How long does a print on wood last?

Indoors, out of the rain and not in direct sunlight, a wooden panel will last a long time. Our material data sheet does not specify an exact lifespan in years, so we do not quote one. What is certain for plywood, however, is that the sheet is PVC-free and has an Ecoscore of 3.

Will a sticker be applied to the wood, or will it be printed directly onto it?

We print directly onto the board, including with white ink. This allows the grain to show through the lighter colours, which is precisely the effect people look for when choosing wood. For large print runs, we use screen printing, applying one colour at a time.

Which type of wood is best to choose?

3.5 mm poplar plywood is the lightest and thinnest. Plywood is sturdy and suitable for larger panels. Banova ranges from 12 to 40 mm and remains remarkably light for its thickness, which is useful for individual letters and thick panels.

What is the difference between this and a print on Forex?

Forex is a foamed plastic sheet: lighter, cheaper and a smooth white. You should choose wood when the surface itself needs to contribute to the overall look and feel, such as in a showroom, a museum or an interior. For a simple indoor sign, Forex is usually the logical choice.

Can I have letters or a shape milled out of the wood?

Yes. We mill the sheet into a rectangle, a special shape or individual letters, and drill holes to the diameter you specify. Banova is a popular choice for individual letters, as the sheet can be thick without becoming heavy.

Can I work out the price myself?

18 mm plywood is available in the ordering module, either straight-edged or milled to shape, as well as in the form of milled letters. For other types of wood, different thicknesses or special finishes, please request a quote, stating your dimensions and quantity.

Do you install the panels?

That’s possible. Creafor has its own installation team who will visit you at a time agreed with you. For a showroom or a museum display, we’ll hang the series exactly as shown on the plan.

What is the largest size that can be produced in one piece?

For plywood, our material data sheet specifies 1222 at 2500 mm. We construct larger surfaces using multiple panels.

What is the minimum number of items I can have printed on wood?

From as little as one piece. A single panel for a showroom or a museum is the most common request.

Will the wood grain remain visible?

It does show through the lighter colours, though, and that’s usually exactly the intention. Where we print with opaque white or a dark colour, the grain disappears. Just let us know what you’d like, and we’ll adjust the ink composition accordingly.

What about the environmental aspects of wood?

Plywood is PVC-free and scores three out of five on our eco-scale. It is a natural material, but it is glued, so it cannot be recycled as waste paper. If you are looking for a board that can be recycled as waste paper, then Reboard is the right choice.

What is the difference between this and Reboard?

Both are PVC-free and designed for indoor use. Wood is heavier, stiffer and will last for years, with a visible grain. Reboard is made of cardboard; it is much lighter, intended for a campaign or exhibition stand, and can be recycled as waste paper afterwards.

Description Print on wood

Would you like a panel that doesn’t look like an ordinary advertising hoarding? When printing on wood, the grain remains visible through the lighter colours, meaning the surface itself tells a story. Museums, exhibitions and showrooms are increasingly opting for this. Creafor prints directly onto the board, including with white ink, so there’s no film in between to cover up the texture. Wood is, however, intended for indoor use, as it is less moisture-resistant than plastic. If you’re mainly looking for a lightweight and inexpensive panel for an indoor sign, without that natural look, then you’re better off with print on forex. If you would like individual letters or a logo milled from the plate, please see milling letters.

Materials for Print on wood

Poplar plywood, 3.5 mm

The lightest option. Suitable for a panel that is hung on a wall or moved regularly, where weight is more important than rigidity.

Plywood, 4 to 18 mm

The standard sheet. The 18-millimetre version is listed in the ordering module. According to our material data sheet, the plywood is PVC-free, has an Ecoscore of three out of five and is available in dimensions up to 1222 by 2500 mm.

Banova, 12 to 40 mm

Lightweight and our favourite choice for thicker panels and individual letters. At forty millimetres, a letter takes on depth without the whole thing becoming too heavy to hang up.

Printing and finishing

  • Printed directly onto the board, including with white ink, so there is no film covering the grain
  • Full-colour digital printing, or colour-by-colour screen printing for large print runs
  • MDF boards when a smooth surface is required

Cutting, milling and hanging

  • Milled into a rectangle, a freeform shape or individual letters
  • Drill holes to the diameter you specify
  • Individual letters from the plate itself, see milling letters
  • Mounting hardware and suspension systems tailored to the weight
