Frequently asked questions about forex panels

What is forex?

Forex is a foamed plastic sheet that is lightweight yet rigid enough to be used as a sign. You’ll recognise it from signs on a counter, display boards in a shop window and panels on an interior wall.

Can forex be left outside?

Our product specification states that Forex is only suitable for indoor use, so we cannot guarantee its performance outdoors. If the sign is to be mounted on a building façade, by the roadside or on a building site, please choose Dibond. This material is designed for long-term outdoor use.

What thickness of Forex should I use?

We stock white in 3, 5 and 10 mm as standard, and coloured in 3 and 5 mm. For a small sign mounted on a wall, 3 mm is sufficient. The larger the panel, the thicker the sheet must be, otherwise it will sag.

How do I hang a Forex panel?

A 3 mm sheet is light enough to be secured with double-sided tape or Velcro, so there’s no need to drill. If you’d like it to be more secure, we can provide drill holes in the diameter you specify, spacers, a frame or a plinth.

What is the difference between Forex and Dibond?

Forex is a foamed PVC sheet for indoor use; it is lighter and cheaper. Dibond has aluminium outer layers and is approved for long-term outdoor use. Dibond is the right choice for a façade sign or a street-facing nameplate.

Is there a PVC-free alternative to Forex?

Yes. Forex itself contains PVC. If you’d like to avoid that, we’ll look at Ecoboard or Foamboard with you. For indoor use, Reboard is also an option: it’s made entirely of cardboard and can simply be disposed of with the paper afterwards.

Could you come and install the panels?

That’s possible. We have our own installation team who work on site every day. For a set of panels in a showroom or shop, we’ll hang them up ourselves. If you’d prefer to do it yourself, we’ll supply the mounting materials.

How much does it cost to print on forex?

That depends on the size, thickness and finish. Forex is available in four variants in our ordering module, where you can enter your own dimensions and see the price. For coloured sheets, films and milling work, we provide a bespoke quote.

What is the minimum number of items I can have printed on forex?

From one item. For a set of identical plates, the price per item is lower, as the plates only need to be prepared once.

What is the largest size that can be produced in one piece?

Our product specification states 2050 by 3050 mm. For larger surfaces, we use multiple panels, positioning the joint where it is least obtrusive.

Can forex be milled into a specific shape?

Yes. We can mill any contour that can be drawn, including internal shapes and recesses. A silhouette, a logo or an arrow does not incur any extra material costs, only milling time.

Can I have a blank forex board cut to size?

Yes, even without a print. Just let us know the dimensions and we’ll supply the sheets pre-cut.

What about the environmental aspect of forex?

Forex is expanded PVC and scores one out of five on our eco-scale, the lowest in our range of sheets. If you wish to work PVC-free, use Ecoboard as a replacement for the 3 mm sheet and Foamboard or Bubbleboard for the 5 mm sheet.

Description Forex panels

If you need a sign in your shop window, above a shelf or on an indoor wall, printing on Forex is usually the cheapest option. The sheet is light enough to be hung using Velcro or double-sided tape, so you don’t need to drill holes or use a mounting system, and once the display is taken down, nothing is left in the wall. That’s why Forex is a popular choice for price tags at the till, signage in a corridor, panels at a trade fair stand and decoration in a showroom. We print on 3, 5 and 10 mm thicknesses, single-sided or double-sided, and cut or mill the panel to the shape you supply. In 10 mm thickness, we also mill individual letters. If the sign is to be displayed outdoors or if you wish to use PVC-free materials, Forex is not the right choice; Ecoboard and Foamboard are the alternatives.

Materials for Forex panels

White Forex, 3 to 10 mm

The standard sheet for indoor use. Three millimetres is sufficient for a sign mounted on a wall, five millimetres for a larger panel, and ten millimetres if the panel is to be freestanding or if we are milling letters out of it.

Coloured Forex, 3 and 5 mm

Blue, green, yellow, red, grey and black. This is useful when the colour of the plate itself can serve as the background, as it means there is no need to print across the entire surface.

Foil-coated Forex, 3 and 5 mm

Reflective, fluorescent, glow-in-the-dark, mirror, carbon, sandblasted or translucent. The film is applied to the plate, giving the sign an effect that cannot be achieved with ink alone.

Protective layers

  • Laminate in matt, satin or gloss finishes
  • Whether for the short or long term, depending on where the sign is displayed

Cutting, milling and hanging

  • Straight-edged, with rounded corners or milled into a freeform shape
  • Drilled holes to the diameter you specify
  • Full-colour digital printing, or colour-by-colour screen printing for large print runs
  • Individual letters, milled from a 10 mm plate, see milling letters
  • Fitting components: frame, base, spacers and mounting systems

  • a sign in your shop window that you hang up with tape
