Frequently asked questions about measuring rods
What are printed measuring sticks used for?
Usually as a freebie or promotional gift. Schools order them with the school’s name printed on them, whilst companies hand them out at trade fairs or with deliveries. It’s a gadget that’s used rather than thrown away.
What sizes can I order?
The ordering module offers three standard sizes: 160 by 25 mm, 210 by 40 mm and 310 by 40 mm. We also produce measuring rulers entirely to your specifications in terms of size and shape.
Which material should I choose?
1 mm polystyrene is white and rigid, and is approved for outdoor use. 0.8 mm Opaline Priplak is semi-transparent. We also work with PVC or polypropylene film, in white or semi-transparent, and with 1 mm anodised aluminium.
Can I see through the slats?
Yes, the semi-transparent version. That’s useful when drawing, as you can still see the line beneath the ruler whilst you’re drawing.
Can a measuring stick be made in a custom shape?
Yes. We can cut a straight line or mill a specific shape, such as a contour around your logo. Mounting fittings are also available for hanging the strip.
What changes when you’re printing a large run?
We print small runs digitally in full colour. For large runs, we use screen printing, applying one colour at a time, which works out cheaper per item.
Are any special inks available?
Yes. Reflective ink, fluorescent ink, phosphorescent ink that glows in the dark, and mirror ink. There is also a protective varnish or protective laminate in matt, satin or gloss finishes.
Does a printed measuring stick contain PVC?
That depends on the material. Polystyrene and Priplak are PVC-free. If you choose the PVC film, then of course it isn’t. If your specifications state ‘PVC-free’, please mention this in your enquiry.
What is the minimum order quantity?
From a certain quantity. Measuring sticks are usually ordered in bulk as promotional gifts, in which case the price per unit drops significantly.
Is the scale still correct?
Yes, provided you use our file or supply your own at actual size. We print without scaling, so what you draw is what you get. A PDF that is sized to fit the paper rather than being at actual size will result in a strip that is slightly out of place.
What about the environmental aspect?
Both materials are PVC-free. Priplak scores 2 out of 5; polystyrene is the version that can also be used outdoors.

A printed folding rule with your logo, on the other hand, will stay put – on a desk, in a school bag or in a toolbox – because it’s actually used. Schools order them with the school’s name printed on them, whilst builders and interior design shops give them to customers who need to sketch or measure something at home. Three sizes are available in the order module, ranging from 160 by 25 mm to 310 by 40 mm. If you want to see the line you’re drawing through the ruler, choose the semi-transparent version. If the ruler needs to withstand daily use and be suitable for outdoor use, the sturdy white ruler is the better choice. To create a custom outline around your logo, we’ll mill out the shape.

Materials for Yardsticks
Polystyrene, 1 to 3 mm
White, PVC-free and suitable for outdoor use. The sturdy design is also suitable for use on a building site or in a workshop.
Opaline Priplak, 500 to 1800 microns
Standard thickness: 800 microns. Transparent, so you can see the surface beneath the strip whilst measuring.
