Frequently asked questions about printing on hollow-core slabs

Can hollow-core slabs be left outside?

Yes, hollow-core slabs are weather-resistant and can withstand rain, wind and UV radiation. That is precisely why they are used for construction site hoardings, election billboards and temporary road signs. Our records do not specify an exact lifespan, so we do not quote a specific duration for this.

How do I secure the sign?

The panels are suitable for brackets, stands or for hanging directly, and are often mounted on wooden posts. If you order them with pre-drilled holes, you can screw them in place straight away. Please specify where you would like the holes to be when placing your order.

What thicknesses and sizes are available?

The standard thickness for corrugated polypropylene is 3.5, 4 or 4.5 mm. For larger versions, we use 8 or 10 mm. Standard sizes range from 35 x 50 cm to 120 x 160 cm, and larger sizes are available.

What is the difference compared to forex?

Hollow-core slabs are the most cost-effective choice for something that will be left outside for a short period and then taken away again. Forex is mainly chosen for signs that will remain in place indoors, in a shop window or on a wall. If you’re unsure, the key question is where the sign will be placed and how long it needs to stay there.

What is the difference between this and a ‘v’ sign?

A ‘V’ sign is made from the same corrugated polypropylene, but with creases so that the flaps fold inwards or outwards. This allows the sign to stand upright on its own or lie flat against a window. If you’re putting a property up for sale or to let, a ‘V’ sign is the right choice.

Can it be printed on both sides?

Yes. You can choose ‘recto’ for single-sided printing or ‘recto verso’ for double-sided printing. The latter is useful for a sign placed along a road that can be seen from both sides.

Can the board be cut into a specific shape?

Yes, as well as straight-cut sheets, you can order profiled sheets or sheets with pre-drilled holes. This allows you to create a sign or a board in the shape of your logo, without the need for any additional construction work.

Can I work out the price myself?

Yes, hollow core slabs are available in the ordering module in 3.5 mm and 8 mm thicknesses, single-sided or double-sided, straight-cut or shaped. You can work out the price yourself there, without needing an account. If you require a thickness or size that isn’t listed, please enquire about it.

What is hollow-core slab?

A lightweight plastic sheet made of corrugated polypropylene, with channels in the core. This makes it lightweight yet sturdy. You’ll recognise them from election signs, construction site signs and estate agent signs.

How much does it cost to print on hollow-core slabs?

Hollow-core slabs are listed as a product option in our ordering module, where you can enter your own dimensions and quantity and see the price straight away. For non-standard sizes or custom cutting, we will provide a bespoke quote.

What is the minimum order quantity?

From a certain quantity. Where there is a series of signs advertising the same offer, the price per item falls, as the items only need to be set out once.

Can I reuse the plates later?

Yes, and that is precisely why this material is chosen for temporary use. Once the campaign is over, you collect the signs, store them flat and put them back out for the next campaign.

What happens to the plate after use?

Hollow-core slabs are made of polypropylene and are collected as such. If you’d like a sign that can be disposed of with waste paper, Biprint is the PVC-free alternative for outdoor use.
