bio plastics

Bio plastics

Bio platics are produced wholly or partly from renewable raw materials.

Plastics from corn waste, potato starch, elephant grass or hemp.

Bioplastics come in compostable and non-compostable varieties.

Creafor is the right partner for printing bio plastics.

Description Bio plastics

Bioplastics are plastics made partly or entirely from renewable, biological raw materials, such as maize starch, sugar cane or cellulose. Unlike conventional petroleum-based plastics, bioplastics offer a more environmentally friendly alternative. By using biological plastics, we avoid releasing microplastics into the environment.

There are two main types of bioplastics:

  • Bio-based plastics: made from natural raw materials, but not necessarily biodegradable.
  • Biodegradable plastics: can be degraded by micro-organisms under certain conditions, regardless of whether they are of biological or fossil origin.

Materials for Bio plastics

Bio plastics exist in sheet and film form. They have different properties such as thickness and colour. All proposed films and sheets can be printed and finished to shape, although there are qualitative differences between them:

Bioplastics for indoor or short-term outdoor use

  • Elephant grass biodegradable film or sheet with light brown ecolook / 0.7/1/2/3 mm thick / 1200 x 2000 mm.
  • Potato starch Biodegradable white film with grained/matt texture / 1/2 mm thick / 1200 x 2000 mm.
  • Maize waste biodegradable white film or sheet with two-sided smooth surface / 1/2/3 mm thick / 1200 x 2000 mm.
  • Hemp biodegradable brown-grey board with grained/matt texture / 2/3 mm thick / 1200 x 2000 mm.

Bioplastics for outdoor or long-term use

  • Organic hemp biodegradable sheet with dark brown look / 2/3/6 mm thick / 1200 x 2000 mm.
  • Lactic acid cold compostable white film smooth texture / 1 mm thick / 1200 x 2000 mm.
  • Sugar cane bio-based grey board with two-sided smooth surface / 2/3 mm thick / 1200 x 2000 mm.

Types of printing and/or films for organic plastic panels:

  • Standard full-colour printing (digitally printed).
  • Colour-by-colour screen printing (large runs)
  • Coloured/white foils on white/coloured boards.
  • Various foils available such as: reflective foil, fluorescent foil, phosphorescent foil (glow in the dark), mirror foil, carbon foil, sandblast foil with print (gradation), translucent foils with print (gradation)...

Types of finish for organic plastic panels:

  • Additional protective laminate matt/satin/glossy (short- or long-term).
  • Rectangle, corner rounding or special shape (milling out).
  • Provide drill holes according to desired diameter.

Why choose bioplastics?

For companies and brands committed to sustainability, bioplastics are a logical choice:

  • Reduce dependence on fossil resources.
  • May be industrially compostable in certain cases.
  • Have a lower carbon footprint in production.

At Creafor and Printvis.be, we are closely following developments and actively experimenting with new, sustainable print carriers - including those based on bioplastics.
