Frequently asked questions about breakaway vinyl or safety stickers

Why does vinyl break when you remove it?

The film has been deliberately made brittle and is fixed with a permanent adhesive. If you pull at it, it will tear into shreds rather than coming away in one piece. If you still want to remove it completely, you’ll have to peel it off millimetre by millimetre, and you’ll be left with marks afterwards.

Can I still reposition a peel-and-stick vinyl sticker after sticking it down?

No. Make sure it’s dry and positioned correctly straight away, as you won’t be able to reposition it. So measure where it’s going to go first, especially if it’s an elongated shape.

Can break vinyl be played outdoors as well?

In practice, breakaway vinyl is used on work equipment and machinery that is also used outdoors, but we do not have a material data sheet for safety vinyl in our records. We are therefore unable to specify a service life for outdoor use. Please let us know where the sticker will be applied and on what surface, and we will advise you whether this is the right choice.

What is the difference between this and a machine sticker?

Peel-off vinyl is designed to be peeled off, whilst a machine-grade sticker is designed to stay in place. If your label needs to withstand grease, water, cleaning products and UV light for years without being damaged, then a machine-grade sticker is the right choice.

Can I have a custom shape cut?

Yes. As well as the straight-cut version, we can cut corners or follow a shape that you provide. In the ordering module, you can choose between ‘Straight-cut vinyl’ and ‘Shaped vinyl’ and calculate the price yourself.

Can it be printed in full colour?

Yes, full colour is possible, as is a design in one or a few solid colours. Text and logos can also be plotted and weeded, with an application sheet over them so that you can transfer everything in one go.

Will Creafor be coming to put up the stickers?

With peel-and-stick vinyl, customers usually apply it themselves; this typically involves small pieces on their own materials. For larger lettering installations on site, however, Creafor does have its own installation team.

Can I have a coat of varnish applied for extra protection?

Not with tear-away vinyl. The film needs to be able to tear, and a varnish or protective film holds the pieces together. If you do want a protective layer, then a different type of film is the better choice.

How much does a peel-and-stick vinyl sticker cost?

Breakaway vinyl is available in two versions in our ordering module, where you can enter your own dimensions and quantity and see the price straight away.

What is the minimum order quantity?

From a certain quantity. Anyone using them as warranty seals usually orders a batch of small stickers in one go, and that’s when the price per sticker drops significantly.

What is the largest size?

Limited to the roll width. In practice, tear-off vinyl is used sparingly, as it is a label rather than an image.

Can I have a number or a barcode printed on it?

That’s possible, but sequential numbers or unique codes require a separate file for each sticker. Send us the sequence, and we’ll let you know how much it will cost to prepare them.

Description Break vinyl or safety stickers

Are you looking for tear-off vinyl stickers to show that someone has tampered with your materials? Creafor prints them in Lokeren, either in straight strips or die-cut to shape. The film is designed so that it does not come off in one piece: anyone trying to remove the sticker will be left with scraps and will have to peel it off millimetre by millimetre. That is precisely the intention. On a hired compressor, a toolbox or the casing of a piece of equipment, such a sticker acts as a seal, a guarantee or an anti-theft mark. The backing material is a safety vinyl with permanent adhesive; the type we use for this is ORACAL 820. It is best to apply it dry, as it cannot be repositioned once applied. If your sticker needs to withstand grease, water and cleaning products rather than being tear-resistant, then you’re better off with our machine stickers.

Materials for Break vinyl or safety stickers

Safety vinyl with permanent adhesive

The film is designed to tear as soon as anyone tries to remove it. A broken seal therefore remains visible. Technical specifications: ORACAL 820 safety vinyl.

Straight or shaped vinyl sheets

The two options from the ordering module. ‘Straight’ refers to a rectangle; the shape follows the outline of your design, with rounded corners or following the shape of your logo.

Printing and finishing

  • Printed in full colour, or in one or a few solid colours
  • Text and logos plotted, cut out and fitted with appliqué film
  • Protective film or varnish is not an option here, as a protective layer holds the film together, which goes against the principle

Places

  • Install in a dry place, on a clean and degreased surface
  • Once pressed down, the sticker cannot be moved
  • There is no material data sheet for safety vinyl in our records, so we do not provide any information on its service life, thickness or EcoScore
